How To Plan Your Yacht Week Croatia

Yacht week 2024 – sailing Pula coastline

To help you plan your holiday, we have prepared an informative yachting guide to help you streamline the entire process of renting yachts.

The following yachting guide provides you with all the necessary details you require to book a yacht.

Here are 3 Steps to Plan Your Sail Week

With several destinations to choose from, you can select a route based on your budget and the month most suitable for you to travel to Croatia. Plan your yacht week in Croatia by following these four steps:

Step 1:  Select Your Package

You can choose from the pre-designed packages, Premium or Luxury Package, or create a Customised Package.

Step 2:  Select Your Crew

A crewed yacht charter in Croatia includes selecting a Full Yacht, Select Cabins, or Solo Spots. Full Yacht pairs you with a skipper and you can invite up to 12 friends to join you. Select Cabins and Solo Spots are a great option for small groups or lone travellers, and it’s a superb way to meet new people.

Aboard, you’ll meet the skipper and the host. Trained and licensed skippers will take you on a tour of the ocean and if you’re interested, teach you how to sail. A host will prepare appetising meals each day and tell you about your surroundings.

One key difference between the two is that while every booking includes a skipper, only Premium and Luxury Packages include a host but you can add a host in the Customised Package.

Step 3: Select Your Payment Option

You can secure your spot on the yacht with a 10% deposit. You also have the option to pay in three easy installments—10%, 30%, and 60%— or divide the cost between each person in your party.

Booking for 2024 is now open!

Croatia Yacht Week 2024:  Getting There

yacht week sailing- how to get to Croatia yacht week
With your route selected and all the essentials packed, you’re ready to set sail for the yacht week. Fly to Croatia’s four major airports for your yacht week adventure

Remember to bring a valid visa, a valid passport, as well as travel insurance and local currency with you on the yacht.

Each route is unlike the other. However, one thing is common among all of them— a week full of laughter and excitement with your best mates! But before that, let’s first get you there!

You can travel to Croatia from four airports with the first three being the main airports widely chosen by travellers. The fourth airport is less likely chosen but worth mentioning.

1.    Split Airport If you Choose Ultra Route and Croatia Original

Old town of Trogir is less than 5.3km away from Split Airport. Flying to Split is practical if you want to attend Croatia Original, which kicks off with an Opening Party in Trogir

Most international flights land at the Split Airport. Every sailing area in the city’s region is easily reachable from Split Airport. The town of Trogir is less than 5,3km away from the airport. If you choose Drumcode route or Croatia Original, we recommend arriving at Split Airport (SPU).

2.    Dubrovnik Airport

Dubrovnik Airport also sees a large number of international travellers. Although the city offers many sailing options, some people prefer to land at the Split Airport and then fly out of Croatia via Dubrovnik Airport.

3.    Zadar Airport

Zadar Airport sees its share of international flights as well. Travellers wanting to access a region north of Split can choose a flight landing at Zadar Airport.

4.    Zagreb Airport

Zagreb Airport is a practical choice for travellers planning to visit the capital of Croatia, Zagreb. The city is more than 400 km away from Split and 200 km from the coast.

However, your sailing party in Croatia will be incomplete without a yacht.

In each city, you’ll find a wide range of companies with a diverse selection of yachts for rent.

Croatia Yacht Charter:  Renting a Boat

Do you need a license to rent a boat in Croatia? It depends. Are you sailing a skippered yacht charter or a bareboat yacht charter?

  • Skippered Yacht Charters don’t require you to have a boating license, as the boat’s skipper will be navigating the charter.
  • Bareboat Yacht Charters require you to have a boating license.

If you’re opting for the second option, you’ll need to have the following sailing qualifications to be at the helm of the boat:

  • International Certificate of Competence from the European Sailing Authority.
yacht week Greece sailing
You can sail out of Croatia to the Greece Yacht Party if you have RYA Qualifications. The yacht party in Greece has 11 weeks to choose from, with dates from May to September. There will be lots of hip hop music, regatta, visits to Acropolis
  • RYA Qualifications allow you to sail a bareboat yacht charter out of Croatia.
  • American Sailing Association (ASA) issues the ASA 104 Bareboat Yacht Charter Certificate to sailors and it’s commonly accepted in Croatia.
  • US Sailing issues the International Proficient Certificate and the Bareboat Cruising Certificate. Croatia usually accepts both certificates.

Whether you’re renting a boat to steer yourself or sailing with a trained and licensed skipper, it’s important to have prior knowledge of the different types of yachts you can rent.

Choose your Yacht for your Croatia Boat Week Party

Choosing the right yacht for your 7 days adventure boat party

Your sail week in Croatia can’t begin without a yacht. Before you arrive in Croatia, consider shortlisting a few yachts to save time. Kickstart your yacht week in Croatia by choosing from one of the following yachts:

1.    Monohull Sailing Yachts (Sailboats)

Monohull sailing boats, powered by sails, are available at various “per day” rates. They are an affordable option for people on a tight budget. On the sailboat, you can easily hop from island to island, discover hidden coves, and come across sandy beaches. You can rent a sailboat by size depending on the number of people in your group. Large groups should consider renting a full-sized luxury yacht.

2.    Catamarans

catamaran for yacht week Croatia
A popular yacht to rent for the yacht week routes is Catamaran Leopard 50

Catamarans feature two hulls with a cockpit and a saloon between them. You can either rent a sailing catamaran (known as only catamarans) or power catamarans.

Catamarans feature two engines, but the sails are their primary power source. Larger groups prefer to rent luxury catamarans, as they are spacious and offer stability. Large-sized catamarans offer increased privacy and showers and toilets in the staterooms. There’s also ample space to sit comfortably on the deck and saloon.

You can rent a catamaran for a week if you desire to spend the bulk of your holiday on the Croatian waters.

Power Catamarans feature two powerful engines, which serve as their main power source. Since they don’t have a mast or sails like its counterpart, they offer even more room on the deck. If you’re opting for a luxury catamaran charter, it’s recommended that you take a crewed yacht charter in Croatia with a qualified skipper.

3.    Motorboats

motorboats and yachts moored at Krk Island
Motorboats to rent at Krk Island for your yacht week adventure

Motorboats include everything from private boats used for fishing to luxury motorboat yacht charters outfitted with cabins. These boats are an ideal choice to take out into the sea because they generate sufficient speed to cover large distances in less time.

4.    Luxury Yacht Charters

As mentioned earlier, luxury yacht charters are available to rent for motorboats, catamarans, and sailing yachts. A crewed yacht charter in Croatia is slightly expensive but worth the value, as it provides you with a skipper, a host, and the freedom to create a personalised sailing route.

5.    Gulet Charters

Gulet charters are another luxurious option for people looking for a private sailing experience. The charter’s crew looks after you and your guests and the skipper shows you amazing marinas and anchorages in Croatia.

6.    Superyachts

Superyachts or mega yachts are around 24 metres to 180 metres in length. The humongous charters have a spacious chartering area and offer numerous pick-up points. They come with a trained crew and a skipper who possesses extensive knowledge of the wondrous places you’ll encounter on the sea.

7.    Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB)

RIBs are classified as cruising and fishing boats and are for day use only. If you don’t want to spend a week on the ocean, you can rent a RIB for one day to explore the Croatian coast and discover tranquil beaches.

How Much Does it Cost to Rent a Yacht in Croatia?

people swimming around catamarans in Hvar
How much you will spend for a yacht week in Croatia depends on your budget. Gather your friends and discuss how much money you are willing to spend for the yacht week. Then come up with a plan the type of yacht you want to rent and the number of days

It all depends on your budget. The type of boat, the number of days you need it for, and the facilities you opt for such as a crewed yacht charter in Croatia all determine the price. Renting a luxury yacht with a skipper and crew or a superyacht typically costs more than a monohull sailing yacht for instance.

You will also need to buy insurance such as non-refundable insurance or make a refundable damage payment on your credit card. You need to factor everything from flying out to Croatia, renting a boat, as well as purchasing insurance, paying for additional facilities, and the cost of food and drinks to come with a budget. With a budget in hand, you can find boats that fit within it.

Still, the main question remains— have you decided on the city you will set sail from in Croatia?

Rent a Yacht for a Week in Croatia

Croatia has several cities with marinas, so it can be quite confusing if you’re not familiar with the regions most frequented by avid sailing enthusiasts. The following list will help you choose a region to rent (charter) a yacht from:

1.    Rent a yacht for a week from Split

Split town with moored yachts- rent a yacht from Split
Rent a yacht from Split if you have tickets for Croatia Original, which kicks off with an Opening Party in Trogir. The closest airport to Trogir is Split Airport

If you rent a yacht from Split, you can sail to Trogir for the Croatia Original yacht week and Ultra route. Split is the second largest city in Croatia with a well-known and fully-established marina network. The city draws travellers to its striking beaches as well as the historic architecture.

For Croatia Ultra, and Croatia Original routes, you will sail to Vis Island and Hvar Island. While in Vis, visit Komiza with your friends, as well as sail to the spectacular Blue Cave and the nearby Green Cave.

Here is an idea: if you arrive in Croatia earlier, before you sail off the waters of Split, why don’t you check on the Eye of the Earth wonder. It’s a marvelous place on Cetina River, and by car it is just an hour and 30 min away from Split.

2.    Rent a yacht for a week from Dubrovnik

You can rent a sailing boat, motorboat, catamaran, or a yacht charter from Dubrovnik. After you rent a boat in Dubrovnik, you can charter it from the ACI Marina in Komolac. The marina is located about 4 km away from the centre of Dubrovnik. You can travel to the marina by car, taxi, or bus.

From Dubrovnik, sail 88.64 nautical miles to reach the city of Split, Croatia’s port city.

Dubrovnik, the Adriatic Coast’s jewel, is an ancient walled town that attracts travellers with its promise to show them a good time on the sea. Many companies based in the city offer boat rental in Dubrovnik. Some people, who rent yacht charters, do it with the purpose to visit Montenegro. The boat rental company can guide you on the type of boats you’re allowed to take outside Croatia.

3.    Rent a yacht from Istria

The north Istrian coast features small fishing villages and the Brijuni Islands. You can rent a boat in Istria from the ACI Marina Pula, Marina Veruda, Marina Trget, ACI Marina Pomer, and Marina Nautica Novigrad.

4.    Charter a yacht from Kvarner

Kvarner also goes by Kvarner Bay and Kvarner Gulf. The bay, situated between the Croatian Littoral mainland and the Istrian Peninsula, is home to five large islands, Krk, Cres, Pag, Losinj, and Rab. Situated next to Istria, the bay is centred around Rijeka, the busiest port city on the Adriatic Coast. The most frequented resort in the region is Opatija.

5.    Rent a yacht from Sibenik

Sibenik, situated on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, has several notable sailing areas. They include Marina Mandalina in Sibenik and ACI Marina Vodice, Marina Tisno, and Port Tribunj located northwest of Sibenik.

Southeast of Sibenik, you will find Marina Kremik and also Marina Frapa. On Murter Island, you’ll find the ACI Marina Jezera, Marina Hramina, and Marina Betina. You can rent a boat in Sibenik and sail with your friends or family from one of the city’s sailing areas.

6.    Rent a yacht from Zadar

Zadar harbour in the evening with lots of moored yachts - rent affordable yachts
Zadar’s rental cost for yachts is more affordable. Since Zadar is not too far from Split, you might consider joining the Opening party in Trogir with sailing from Zadar due to the rental cost

Since the city is near the airport, it won’t be difficult to rent a boat in Zadar. Compared to other regions in Croatia, the rental cost for boats is more affordable. From Zadar to Split is only an hour and 30 min by car, so you might consider joining the Opening party in Trogir with a yacht sailing from Zadar.

Zadar is another Croatian city with a well-established and popular marina network. You can sail to Croatia’s northern sailing regions from Zardar because it serves as the primary access point. Known as Croatia’s chartering centre, you’ll find numerous vessels chartered in Dalmatia.

Are you gearing up to travel to Croatia and sail the sea encircled by the entrancing scenery? Once you know the type of boat you want to rent and the city you want to start your sailing adventure from, it’s time to pick the months and the dates.

When to Visit and the Type of Weather to Expect?

The months of July and August see a surge in boat rentals. Regardless of the month you choose for your sail week in Croatia, you’ll come across uncrowded anchorages located far away from the busier major urban centres during peak season.

In July and August, the prices increase whereas prices decrease in May and September. Not only is it less crowded in May and September, you’ll be delighted with the excellent weather and warm sea.

Here’s a look at Croatia’s Climate:

  • You can anticipate a warm climate with gentle winds between May and October.
  • In May, the temperature will be at least 18C.
  • In July and August, the temperature will be about 28C on average.

It’s vital to know about the various winds that Croatia sees. The five main winds that can sail or sink your sailing plans include:

  • The Bora is a dry and cold wind. Expect this wind when you see clouds forming above the mountains that are more than 400 metres in height. However, it’s unnoticeable to anyone who is at a distance of more than 4 kilometres from the peaks.
  • The Jugo invites wet weather in high-pressure regions over the Adriatic Coast. Although the wind tends to stay for many days, it brings warmth with it too due to its wind direction.
  • Libecci arrives after Jugo leaves. It enters from the southwest and is known to be strong and dangerous.
  • Mistral arrives from the northwest. It’s more prevalent in the morning and disappears in the evening. Although not ideal sailing conditions, it’s still almost perfect for daytime sailing.
  • Tramontana arrives from the mountains in the north and with it, brings cool and pleasant winds to the seas. However, the wind gusts can be pretty powerful.

If you’re not sailing with a skipper, the various winds will tell you about the opportune time to sail the Croatian waters. If you’re navigating the boat, knowing and understanding the country’s weather patterns will come in handy.

You’re all set to sail!
